Cross-country skiing: the 24th Engadin Women’s Race took place under bright blue skies and in perfect snow conditions
1,198 women registered for the 17 km cross-country skiing course from Samedan to S-chanf, Switzerland – more than at any time since the pandemic.
In the end, the podium was in Swiss hands: Lea Fischer from Davos beat Giuliana Werro in the final sprint. Carla Wohler, winner in 2023, placed third.
Giuliana Werro (SUI) had been considered the biggest favorite of the 24th Engadin Women’s Race prior the race. She, who had won the Engadin Skimarathon in 2023, did a lot of leading work in a small group with Lea Fischer (SUI) from Davos. After the challenging climb near Zuoz, the two managed to shake off Carla and Gianna Wohler (both SUI). Werro then tried to lose Lea Fischer as well. However, Fischer stayed on and won the final sprint in S-chanf by 8 tenths of a second. On third place, about 15 seconds behind, was Carla Wohler from Scuol, who won the Engadin women’s race two years ago in record time. She beat her twin sister Gianna in the second final sprint of the day.
Winner Lea Fischer was taking part in the Engadin Women’s Race for the first time. The duel against Giuliana Werro demanded a lot from her, she said at the finish. “Giuliana almost managed to overtake me after Zuoz.” Giuliana Werro was very satisfied with her performance despite the defeat in the final sprint. “I felt weak all week and was happy to be able to start at all. After this race, I’m now looking forward to the Engadin Skimarathon in a week’s time!”
