The wind conditions were so extreme that even the pros were pushed to their limits. In the final of the second round, Köster was initially well ahead of his rival Marcilio Browne from Brazil, but then a mega gust snatched the five-time world champion’s equipment during a jump. Köster crashed, his equipment was blown a good 30 meters away and then washed ashore over the reef. The German was able to return to the competition with replacement equipment, but lost that final against reigning world champion Marcilio Browne. With Köster’s victory the day before, the score was now 1:1 and the two opponents had to go into a tiebreaker. In the final showdown, Köster displayed tremendous mental strength. The German led by more than ten points at times. Browne managed to catch up, but in the end it was Köster who had worked out the better tactics and taken advantage of the opportunities. Köster thus won ahead of Browne. Third place went to Marino Gil Gherardi from Spain. Windsurf World Cup Gran Canaria Wave discipline Final results, men 1. Philip Köster (GER) 2.
